No place for injustice, partiality or corruption

Te herinneren - Kukumbuka - Se souvenir - to Remember

From the previous publication, we can conclude that we are dealing with a righteous God. Therefore, we must be guided by that awe of Jehovah. For this we must proceed with precision, for Jehovah our God is strictly just, impartial and incorruptible.

“Therefore let the fear of Jehovah be with you, and heed what you do; for with Jehovah our God there is no injustice nor respect for the person, nor acceptance of gifts.” (2 Chronicles 19:7)

Some may question the way God behaves. Critics often say that God is not honest. In his letter to the Romans, Paul shows that God is super honest – After all, He has made us all and gives everyone equal opportunities.

As our Maker, He doesn’t actually need anyone’s permission to do whatever He wants with His creation. He can create, destroy and recreate His living creatures when He pleases and how He pleases.

“29 Hide Your face, they are overcome with terror, take away their breath, give up the spirit and return to their dust. 30 If You send out Your Spirit, they will be created and You will renew the face of the face of the face of the earth.” (Psalms 104:29-30)

“19 You will then say to me, What then does He have to say? For who has resisted His will? 20 But, O man, who are you to contradict God? Shall also the workings say to him who made it, Why have you made me this way? 21 Or does the potter have no power over the clay, to make from the same lump of clay one object an honorable one, the other a dishonorable object?” (Romans 9:19-21)

We must not forget that the first people God created had gone against Him. God had warned them that death would come upon them if they ate from the « Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil ». So since the fall of Adam, humanity has deserved to die.

“Therefore, as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death came upon all men, in whom all have sinned.” (Romans 5:12)

But Jehovah has invited people to live in His mercy. He had Jesus in mind from the beginning. God’s mercy is centered in that Nazarene man.

“He is known beforehand, before the foundation of the world, but revealed in recent times for our sake (1 Peter 1:20)

First He chose a people as His inheritance (Deut 7:6; Psa 32:11). Then His invitation extended to the pagans. Jehovah then called both Jews and Gentiles to life in Jesus. His invitation has gone out to everyone.

“And the Gospel must first be preached to all nations.” (Mark 13:10)

Christadelphians and many other Bible students have been proclaiming the Good News for several years now. Over the centuries, serious Bible explorers or Bible researchers have entered the world as faithful followers of Jesus to preach Jesus. But few follow their preaching and have accepted God His offer of salvation; most chose the sacrifices of the world rather than eternal life.

“13 Enter through the narrow gate, for wide is the gate, and wide is the way that leads to destruction, and many are there who enter through it; 14 but the gate is narrow, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)

As members of an ecclesia, we fully realise our position and hold on to our bondage in Christ. As brothers and sisters in Christ, we ensure that injustice, partiality or corruption cannot take place in the ecclesia. Furthermore, together we share the love that Christ has also shown for us and we realise that God’s decisions are always just and good.

Quotes from God’s Word

Quotes from God’s Word.
“14  What shall we say then? [Is there] unrighteousness with God? Far be the thought.
15 For he says to Moses, I will shew mercy to whom I will shew mercy, and I will feel compassion for whom I will feel compassion. 16 So then [it is] not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shews mercy.
17 For the scripture says to Pharaoh, For this very thing I have raised thee up from amongst [men], that I might thus shew in thee my power, and so that my name should be declared in all the earth.
18 So then, to whom he will he shews mercy, and whom he will he hardens.
19 Thou wilt say to me then, Why does he yet find fault? for who resists his purpose? 20 Aye, but thou, O man, who art *thou* that answerest again to God? Shall the thing formed say to him that has formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 Or has not the potter authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make one vessel to honour, and another to dishonour?
22 And if God, minded to shew his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much long-suffering vessels of wrath fitted for destruction; 23 and that he might make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared for glory, 24 us, whom he has also called, not only from amongst [the] Jews, but also from amongst [the] nations?” (Romans 9:14-24 Darby)

Being pure to meet God

Being pure to meet God

Thought - consideration - Contemplation - reflection

When we want to meet God, to have Him in our midst, we should try to be as pure as possible. In us, there may be no hatred towards others, but rather the will to show love to as many people as possible.

As God has compassion for us, we should have compassion for others. As a matter of fact, we have the need to get God’s compassion and forgiveness.

The point we must grasp is that all need God to show mercy to them – and we are most unwise to question the morality of God as to where He shows mercy and where He does not! Let us meditate on what he causes to happen

“in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy” (Romans 9:23).

God “has mercy on whomever he wills” (Romans 9:18).

It is not always easy to understand how God works. And sometimes we do get the feeling that He is not showing us mercy at a particular time, or as if He is abandoning us for a while.

Still, we need to be patient and show trust in God. Be that as it may, we must show to others that we have full trust in God and want to share His love with others as He and His son share love with us.

Meeting of God

A bridge to meet others

We pray to You oh God,

In very small things we have met You, Lord,
in the green of the trees, in birdsong, in breath and earth, in sunset.

We met you in very small beauty:
in a lily on the water, in a shell on the beach, in flowers on the table, in a ring on a hand.

In very little joy we have met You:

in a bright moon, in a tender mother, in a faithful friend.
In simple people we have met You:
in children playing, in youth giving,
in a man who can kneel, in a woman who forgives.

In all these gifts You came to meet us, Lord,
now You are the bridge through which we meet others.

Opening Remarks at the Service for Unity in Our Faith Community

God is love.
In Him we may live, move and be.
Inspired by this love, we remember Jesus,
who prayed several times to his heavenly Father as an example.

Jesus prayed to the Father
that we might all be one
and share in his joy.

Let us then gather as one community,
as children of the same Father,
around his Word and table
to joyfully celebrate service to God.

Colossians – An Exhortation for Unity in Love #3 Living the Truth

encouragement English

Chapter 3 – Living the Truth

Colossians chapter 3 begins by describing the aspirations and affections of the disciple of Christ:

“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth at the right hand of God. Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth …” (Col. 3:1-2).

The principle is amply demonstrated in the words of the Proverb:

“the way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath” (Prov. 15:24).

Interestingly, the same point is made to Israel concerning their lack of obedience to Jehovah’s ways:

“… for my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith Jehovah. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isa. 55:8-9).

This passage from Isaiah is often misapplied to show that God’s ways are different from “our” ways.
However, the context is to do with faithless Israel (see verse 7), not those who are sanctified with the blood of the Lamb. For us, as disciples of Christ, we ought to know better than Israel of old. For them, the ways of the Almighty were so high above their frame of thought that they could not perceive the message of the prophets. But we, however, recognising that Jehovah is High and Mighty, and His Ways high above the natural man, ought to

“seek those things which are above” –

that is, to make God’s ways our ways. To try to conform to the image of Christ (Rom. 8:29), who was

“the express image of his [i.e. God’s] person” (Heb. 1:3).

Rather than to manifest the grovelling spirit of the natural man which, as that of the beasts of the field declines to earthly things, the spirit of the renewed man « goeth upward » (Eccl 3:21), focalising upon the place of favour and blessing – the Father’s right hand, where our lord is positioned. And in this, we have the example of our lord before us, who always kept the things pertaining to his Father’s Kingdom and Righteousness to the forefront of his mind, always seeking the will of his Father dwelling in the Heaven above:

« I have set Jehovah always before me: because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved … My flesh also shall rest in hope. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore » (Ps 16:8-11).

In these words, the Spirit of Christ speaks prophetically of the meditations of our lord Jesus, faced with the agony of Crucifixion. Elsewhere it is testified that he,

« for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God » (Heb 12:2).

And this Psalm enlightens us as to what that « joy » was which was set before the Lord.

« I have set Jehovah always before me »,

and positioned at His Right Hand, the future seat of power upon which he would set, the Lord saw joy and pleasures:

« in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore ».

So it was, that by continual meditation and reflection upon such a joyous vision of Glory – even his Father’s Glory, our lord was strengthened to overcome, enduring the shame of crucifixion that he might ultimately obtain that place of joy himself.
And even so it is with us. For the death of Christ was not the death of one individual – but that of all who are aligned with it in Baptism:

« if one died for all, then were all dead » (2Cor 5:14).

In our baptisms, we died with Christ. And for us, as with our lord, crucifying the flesh is not a single event
at the time of our immersion; but a daily struggle as we seek to « die daily » (1Cor 15:31). So the exhortation was given to the Colossians, that in seeking heavenly things – the « pleasures » at the Father’s right hand – they must crucify earthly things:

« mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence and covetousness which is idolatry » (Col 3:5).

As we died in Christ therefore, we must put to death earthly things, and do as he did, focus instead on the Joyous Vision of the Divine Presence, and all that it speaks of. For if we are dead with him, then are we also risen with him (Rom 6:5), and our life is bound up in him:

« for ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God ».

There is no earthly thing which appears in the presence of the Father – only things of the Spirit. And as our lives are

« with Christ in God »,

who is the fountain-head of all life, then we ought to have no earthly thing dwelling in us. Only things of the Spirit. How hard that is to maintain, but how necessary to try!

Reason enough to be baptised and become a member of our community

questions

When we talk to several people, we discover how many people have many questions about faith and how many are not even really well aware of the doctrines or teachings of the church community in which they are baptized and of which they are members.

Catholic church,

In Great Britain, forty years ago it was not surprising to find several religious communities in villages. At that time there were a variety of churches there. In Belgium, on the other hand, there was not much diversity and in the villages there was usually only a Roman Catholic Church. Today, when many people and even on television in Flanders are heard talking about ‘the Church’, they usually mean the Catholic Church. Many are not even aware that there are still many subdivisions or denominations in that Catholic Church.

Nowadays, there are more Protestant churches in Belgium, compared to the last century. But when people talk about the Protestant church, they are more likely to talk about a collected set of Protestant churches, with the Belgian Protestant Church and the Pentecostal churches being the two most important, in addition to the evangelicals.

It is striking that among Protestant believers there are many more believers who know what the teachings of their community are. In those groups, no one will be found to deny the Trinity if they belong to a Trinitarian Protestant movement, unlike Catholics.

Over the years, there are more Catholics who are more aware that Jesus is the son of God. However, we also encounter Catholics who say that they believe that Jesus is not God but the son of God. They do not realise that this goes against Catholic teaching where it is taught that Jesus is god the son, assuming that God came to earth to deliver humanity from the curse of sin and death.

Papal permission from Clement IV in 1265 to sell indulgences for the construction of the Cathedral in Utrecht
Purgatory in the Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry

There are also many people who doubt any faith and are more likely to ask what it can bring them. People like what they do and get them something. Faith is no different.
The Catholic Church has always been a master at promising people everything. They used to go so far that people buy off their sins with indulgences. No one seemed to think that in such a case one could bribe God and that the rich could rather be remitted of temporary punishments (penitence) for sins, while people who were poor had to suffer longer in purgatory.

It is strange that those members of the traditional churches no longer asked their clergy about these matters and about the specificities of God and Jesus.

Thus one might ask:

  1. If God is an unchangeable eternal Spirit who no man can see, how could He appear as a man on the earth and be seen by several?
  2. If Jesus were God, why does he claim not to be a spirit, and can anyone who sees him continue to live while the Bible says that the man who sees God is dying?
  3. If God is a God who doesn’t lie, why does He claim that He knows everything and that Jesus is his son, who in turn says that he doesn’t know things, because it is only given to God to know those things?

Strange that those believers are satisfied as quickly as their spiritual leaders say that they cannot understand that, and that they should believe those many things as dogmas, even if they do not understand them.

The Catholic Church has succeeded in scaring people with many things for centuries, so that they would step in with that Catholic doctrine.

A neighbour I had suggested to come to our Anderlecht ecclesia was told by his Catholic Church that he would then commit a mortal sin.

Rather, we believe that those who continue to adhere to church rules of doctrine rather than Biblical rules that they will remain in the world of sinfulness and will not have a chance to enter God’s Kingdom.

If one wants to be able to go through the narrow gate of the Kingdom of God, we believe one would do well to live according to Biblical norms and teachings. Scripture is not as difficult to understand as many churches claim. If one reads the Bible carefully, one will gain sufficient insight to know which path to take.

In this way one can also see that God is an Eternal Spirit and that Jesus is his beloved son who has put aside his own will to fully realize God’s Will. The 66 books that make up the Bible provide a clear insight into how things are going. If there are still many questions, it is up to the spiritual leaders of the churches to give an honest and effective answer.

In the Community of Brethren in Christ, believers are open to receive outsiders and assist them with counsel.

We do admit that certain activities, such as participation in bread and wine, are only permitted to be enjoyed by believers who have enjoyed a Biblical baptism. If one really wants to become a partaker of that memorial meal, the community is open to educating you in their faith and giving you the opportunity to be baptised by immersion in water, as a sign of surrender to God and as a sign of accession to our community of faith.

A Chief Shepherd Who gave us a shepherd who laid down his life for us.

We as sheep in the world keep looking around. On the green pastures where we may graze, if we look closely we can see a sent helper sent by the Chief Shepherd to the fields to ensure that the sheep would all be driven together and brought to the stable.

The shepherd walks right up to the gate. The gatekeeper opens the gate to him and the sheep recognise his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he gets them all out, he leads them and they follow because they are familiar with his voice.

Also for those who were in the dark and have seen the star lighting up, they won’t follow a stranger’s voice but will scatter because they aren’t used to the sound of it.

They heard the Voice of God, Who gave them this shepherd to follow. That sent one from God said to his disciples

“Verily, verily, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.” (John 10:7 Darby)

In the darkness were enough other shepherds, but they are not the good ones.

“All whoever came before me are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not hear them.” (John 10:8 Darby)

Good to notice the good sheep didn’t listen to the sheep stealers. They saw the lightening star, the Gate to go through.

“I am the door: if any one enter in by me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and shall go out and shall find pasture.” (John 10:9 Darby)

We want to be cared for, willing to freely go in and out, and find pasture.

After long grazing, we sheep should no longer doubt who that good shepherd can be. It is the sent one from the Chief Shepherd who came so the sheep can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of. He is the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd who puts the sheep before himself, sacrifices himself if necessary.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep:” (John 10:11 Darby)

Today we are together as sheep who matter to him. All gathered in our ecclesia look up to him who is sent by the Chief Shepherd. This sent one is the Good Shepherd who knows his own sheep and his own sheep know him. It is in the same way that the Father knows him, and that this good shepherd knows the Father.

“15 as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep which are not of this fold: those also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one flock, one shepherd.” (John 10:15-16 Darby)

We know that the good shepherd has other sheep in addition to those in this pen. We look forward to the days that he shall be able to bring them also to the Chief Shepherd’s House. Therefore as helpers to the good shepherd shall his brothers and sisters go out into the world to call the sheep.

Those who shall hear the Good Message shall also recognise the shepherd’s voice. Then it will be one flock, one Shepherd. That shepherd even going so far that he freely lay down his life, free to take it up again.

“On this account the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it again.” (John 10:17 Darby)

Those who stepped out with the pilgrims now follow the sent shepherd from whom no one can take anything away. In him we trust that he received this authority personally from his Father. By him we can see how much God loved the world.

No one needs to be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whosoever believes on him may not perish, but have life eternal.” (John 3:16 Darby)

In God’s House there will be our dwelling place

Whether who we are, God knows us by our name.

We might be in the wilderness and in places where no one knows us, or wants to know about us.
When we hear God knows our name, He knows us insight out.

God gave us the message that He knew us before we were born.
He knows each one of us and calls us by our name.

God sees us insight out, also the parts we are ashamed of.
We cannot hide from God.
Despite our weaknesses or our faults.
He likes us and has the best for us.
He has written our name on the Palms of His Hands.
God has redeemed us and called us by our name.

A journey full of questions and answers sealed with God’s Scripture

As we embarked on our trek, we met many people with questions.
They dared to join us and joined us on difficult trails.

They braved wildlife, deserts, canyons, waterfalls and wild currents, as well as dangerous swamps.
Darkness could not bother them, for they were sure that a shining star was that light they could follow in the darkness.

After days of difficulties, weeks of questioning, months of questions and answers,
they came so far that they did know where to go and which path to follow further.

They made their choice and no one could change them by it.
They were now sure of That One True God,
Who for them is the Figurehead, The Rock of Trust.

Completing the trek
they now dare to call on the Name of God
in full glory and with a loud voice.
Assured that God knows them by name,
written in indelible ink.
