In previous weeks we have paid attention to the love we must share with each other and which an ecclesia can build.
Today such love was also the subject of the service in Newbury and our Brussels-Leuven ecclesia.
The speaker who commented on Luke 16 pointed out that we should not just sit there, but that we should make a plan in our lives to make friends. It is important for us to realize that how we behave will determine how we can make friends with people around us, but also how we will determine our future.
Today we may also be able to highlight these verses from the Luke Gospel:
“9 I say to you, Make your friends through unrighteous mammon, that when he comes to escape you, they may take you up into the everlasting tents. 10 He who is trustworthy in the small is also trustworthy in the large; and he who is unreliable in the small is also unreliable in the large. 11 Therefore if you are unreliable in false wealth, who will entrust you with true wealth? 12 And if you are unreliable in the good of another, who will give you what is due to you.” (Luke 16:9-12)
Today there are many people who have « Mammon » or the big « Money » as their friend. For many, it’s all about money and what one can acquire with it. On social media people boast about all the things they have been able to purchase.
But that wealth doesn’t exactly bring friendship.
Friendship is hidden in small corners. Small things that do us so much.
The way people greet us or walk past us. Small gestures that can mean so much to us.
The speaker in Newbury also asked us who we wished to serve. The gospel also assures us that whoever is faithful in the slightest thing is faithful in many things.
Who do we serve first and foremost and how?
was asked.
We must realise that we have to make the right choices in life. In doing so, we must also realise that we can only serve one Lord. What we usually see in life is that one often hates one person and while one is very fond of the other. Several times we see a person carrying that first in hand, and the second in contempt. Therefore, let us be so aware that we cannot serve God and money.
“No servant can serve two lords; he will either hate one and love the other, or adhere to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” (Luke 16:13)
We have come to a time where most have forsaken God and have no need to gather weekly in a service for God. In those meetings there are people who look for others and lovingly support each other to continue growing. These brothers and sisters are also ready to come out and show people where True love can be found. They are willing to show people where there are friends ready and wait for them.
It’s how we respond, how we act, that we reflect who we serve.
